Meeting Mount Everest
My Life-Changing Pilgrimage to Nepal: A Unique Journey to Everest Base Camp
When I left Australia for Nepal, I had nothing planned except for my flights in and out of Kathmandu and my first two nights’ accommodation in Thamel. That was it for my 33-day journey! I knew I needed to leave room for everything to unfold naturally, and I’m so incredibly grateful I trusted myself to travel in this way.
I've started uploading my photos and videos from my time in Nepal (May 2024) to YouTube! At the time of publishing this I've currently got days 1-10/33 uploaded.

Why I Chose the Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek for Better Acclimatization
One of the biggest decisions I made during my time in Nepal was to take the Jiri to Everest Base Camp (EBC) route instead of flying directly into Lukla. While most travelers fly into Lukla and trek a 12-14 day loop, I felt that Jiri offered a more gradual acclimatization process, which was essential for my health and a successful trek.
The Jiri to EBC route follows in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. This traditional trailhead offers better acclimatization, giving your body more time to adjust to the high altitudes, which is crucial for a successful and safe trek.
For me, the extra time it took to reach the trail from Jiri was well worth it. It allowed me to move at my own pace, soaking in the incredible views and culture without feeling rushed.
The Freedom to Travel at My Own Pace: The Power of 'Slowly Slowly'
One of my mantras on the trail was "Slowly Slowly." I was never in a hurry. I realized that I didn’t have to follow a set itinerary that others might expect. I didn’t want to rush through this adventure—there was so much more to discover when I let go of expectations.
During my trek, I often had no idea exactly where I was or where I was going, and that was a powerful lesson in trust and surrender. Some days were tough, but I embraced the unpredictability and learned that traveling on my own terms was the most rewarding way.
Why Nepal Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List
As you’ll hear in my YouTube series, “Meeting Mount Everest,” traveling to Nepal made no logical sense at first. But I knew deep down that my soul needed to experience this country. The culture, the people, and the landscapes will change you forever. I experienced just a small portion of Nepal, and I’m certain I’ll return again and again.
Nepal offers not only breathtaking scenery but also a deep, spiritual connection that transforms the way you see the world. The warmth and kindness of the Nepali people will leave an unforgettable mark on your heart.
Meet Padam: The Guide Who Changed My Trekking Experience
I quickly learned that while I thought I could do the trek solo, hiring a local guide was the best decision I made. Padam, my guide from Shivalaya, completely transformed my experience. Without his guidance, I would have likely gotten lost, or worse, been eaten by a bear!
If you’re planning a trek in Nepal, I highly recommend Padam. He knows the terrain intimately, and his deep connection to the region made my journey unforgettable. His knowledge of the trails and his warmth made me feel safe and supported throughout the trek.
I’m honoured to have been able to build Padam this website to help him promote his guiding services as well as his guest house - Kalo Patthar Lodge & Restarunt.
When you choose Padam as your guide or to stay with him and his family at Kalo Patthar Lodge & Restaurant 100% of what you pay goes directly to a local Nepalese family. You have no idea the incredible impact that makes to this beautiful family and their community.
Padam only needs to guide six groups per year to make a significant impact for him and his family. Whether you're a solo trekker or a group of up to 15, choosing Padam as your guide means more than just a guided trek. It directly supports him, his wife, and their children, ensuring they can continue to thrive in their village. Your decision to trek with Padam helps transform their lives and strengthen their community. Knowing that your choice plays such a vital role in supporting his family will add a deeper layer of meaning to your trek, making it a truly rewarding experience that goes beyond the trail.
A Raw and Unedited Account of My Everest Base Camp Trek
Most YouTube videos and blogs you see about trekking to Everest Base Camp are beautifully edited highlight reels, but they often don’t show how challenging the trek can be. For me, this was no easy feat. The trek was physically and mentally demanding, but it was also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.
Through my YouTube channel, I’ve shared my journey day-by-day, showing the unfiltered reality of trekking to Everest Base Camp. It wasn’t easy, and I won’t sugarcoat it—it was tough! But if I can do it, so can you. This experience taught me that I can do hard things, and the challenges I faced only made the rewards more meaningful.
Why Trekking in Nepal Is an Experience Like No Other
Trekking in Nepal is not just about the physical journey—it’s about self-discovery, mental resilience, and the beauty of nature. Along the way, I encountered donkey traffic jams, a broken finger, and moments of terror, joy, and sheer determination. But every step was a part of the larger, beautiful story I’m so grateful to have experienced.
I’m sharing my raw journey on YouTube because I want to inspire those who may never have the opportunity to visit Nepal. For those of you curious about Nepal's culture, landscapes, and people, my videos will offer a unique glimpse into what this incredible country is really like.
